Transcranial direct current stimulation headset receives FCC approval

The Foc.us headset is an early player in the wave of non-invasive devices that will enable improved brain function.  It passes direct current between the cathode and anode, which are placed over the prefrontal cortex, making neurons more excitable.  This helps them to fire more quickly, improving reaction time. When the currents are removed, neurons have additional plasticity.

Early studies have shown that tDCS, which can be used to stimulate regions of the brain other than the prefrontal cortex, such as the motor cortex, can provide therapeutic effects to Parkinson’s and stroke patients.  DARPA has used tDCS to improve the training of snipers, and it has also been used to improve gamer performance.

  1. I like this. My narration work involves headphones and bursts of hyped theatricals. So a variant modelled on clip-on sunglasses would be perfect!
New Scientist (UK) investigated tDCS a few months ago and the reporter suggested you could get DiY results from a 9 volt radio battery. Later I read that when you stimulate one area of the brain, others become less active – so a multi-point approach may be where we are headed. Kudos to Foc.us for getting a neat product passed for market in USA. Who knows when we might see it here in UK?

  6. I can see here that it’s nearly three years since I got intrigued by tDCS. At last, this week, I tried it to see if it could shift the dark cloud of a gloomy documentary on TV.
Just kitchen table stuff: 9v battery, two blobs of wet Kleenex and a standard multimeter.
Ten minutes at one and a half milliamps decisively improved my mood for several hours, and it did not feel like placebo/self suggestion.
The after effect (next morning) was similar to an aspirin: slightly cotton-wooled but not unpleasant.
